Canarsie Homes for Sale
Canarsie is a mixed-use district with a long shoreline facing Jamaica Bay in the southeastern part of the Brooklyn Borough of New York City. Canarsie was originally settled by the Canarsee Indians, and in the early 17th century the Dutch expanded there from Manhattan. The quaint fishing village of the late 19th century soon became a popular summer resort until 1940. Currently there are several residential neighborhoods in the community including suburban areas that provide excellent housing for families looking for an option to more expensive northern parts of the borough. There are a few apartment buildings in the northwestern part of Canarsie but the residential properties in the region are mostly single- and multi-family homes. The architecture in Canarsie is a total mix of everything from large Victorians to brick and shingled row houses. Housing prices have steadily risen since 2012, yet still offer a considerable value compared the northern and central Brooklyn
The northwestern part of Canarsie bordering Brownsville and East Flatbush is a commercially developed area with various shopping centers and office buildings. This includes Canarsie Plaza Shopping Mall which offers restaurants and stores including BJ’s Wholesale Club, PetSmart and Planet Fitness. The mall is a convenient location for the day to day shopping needs of residents in the neighborhood. The Canarsie-Rockaway Parkway and East 105 Street Subway Stations are the first two stations on the L line that connect Canarsie to other parts of Brooklyn and Manhattan.
Other notable places to visit in Canarsie are the many oceanfront outdoor parks including Canarsie Park and Pier and the Fresh Creek Nature Preserve. The shoreline offers fantastic views and is also popular with runners and local fishermen and women. These family-friendly facilities include various sports fields, walking trails, open green spaces, picnic areas, and much more. The end of the L line is a not just a fun, short jaunt from Williamsburg, it’s also becoming a really cool and affordable place to live.
